Who doesn’t love raw cookie dough? If you don’t, I encourage you to either A) check out my outfits instead, or B) hurry up and make this recipe! I remember as a kid digging into the oh so classic, Tollhouse cookie dough tubes. You know what I’m talking about. Those yellow plastic tubes filled with absolute, cookie dough, goodness. It was essential to only eat it by grabbing a spoon and then devouring it while in front of the fridge. Any other way is simply madness. I thought it was the greatest thing ever. That hasn’t changed one bit. It’s still the greatest thing ever, friends. But I remember my Mom always getting mad at us for doing it because it was dangerous to eat raw eggs (and now I’m learning raw flour!?). Joke’s on her though, we never got sick. I’m positive people have, but we dodged a bullet there for sure. The thought of eating raw cookie dough is still nostalgiac for me. Whether it was from the Tollhouse classic yellow tube, or after making cookie dough with Mom around the holidays and eating the batter off the spoon. It’s something that always sparks a childhood memory.

Since the real deal can be dangerous to eat, edible raw cookie dough has become much more popular. Especially since more people are looking for gluten free, paleo or dairy free versions, I feel like this is popping up on my Pinterest more and more! This inspired me to try out a few online recipes and find one that worked for me that was not only easy but delicious. Plus, fun fact, chocolate chip cookies are not my number one cookie choice. But the batter? That’s where it’s at.

The Benefits of Raw Cookie Dough (yes there are BENEFITS)

The biggest benefit is the ultimate satisfaction in eating this delicious treat. You satisfy your sweet tooth. And also, satisfy that nostalgiac childhood memory of devouring cookie dough around the holidays when Mom told you not to.

I’m also the kind of person who likes a bite or two of something sweet after a meal so this healthier version that’s safe to eat satisfies that craving for me. Plus, it’s easy to whip up!

Besides the personal emotional benefits, healthy edible raw cookie dough can actually have some other health benefits too. Don’t believe me? Watch me. This recipe includes nut butter, I prefer almond and if you do too, you’ll be getting a good dose of magnesium which boosts heart healthand also Vitamin E.

Besides the nut butter, you can easily swap out the classic chocolate chips in this recipe for cacao nibs (or add them in for added crunch). Cacao nibs aren’t sweetened, so if you’re watching your sugar this is a great ingredient to swap out the chocolate with and just leave the honey/agave as your sweetener. These little cacao nibs are also packed with antioxidants, fiber and iron. So basically a vitamin if you really think about it. Hey it was worth a shot, right? Either way, you can feel good about eating this sweet treat when you know there’s at least something somewhat healthy behind the flour and honey, right?

Healthy Edible Cookie Dough Recipe

One of the things I love about this recipe is how versatile it can be. Almost every ingredient can be swapped for something you prefer to adjust to your dietary needs. Easily swap out the all-purpose flour for your favorite gluten-free flour and this recipe becomes healthy, edible AND gluten free. You could even use almond flour (1:1 substitution) for a paleo and grain free version. Prefer peanut butter cookies? Swap almond butter for peanut butter for a more prominent peanut taste. You can really swap it for any nut butter you prefer. The creamier, the more smooth the batter will be. And lastly, there’s no milk or butter in this recipe making it dairy free!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup All-Purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup nut butter (almond, peanut, cashew, whichever you prefer)
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/3 cup of Cacao nibs and or chocolate chips (get creative! add in sprinkles or M&Ms if you like!)
  • 1/4 cup honey – Can also use agave, or maple syrup
  • 4 oz of applesauce – I used unsweetened
  • 1 tsp vanilla Extract

TIP:If you’re not into raw flour (some say it can carry bacteria) you can cook it. Simply add your flour to a baking sheet and bake for 5-10 minutes at 350 degrees. Let cool before adding into your mixture.

Directions

  1. Add all wet ingredients to a bowl and mix.
  2. Fold in flour until combined
  3. Add chocolate chips
  4. Refrigerate in an airtight container
