Its most obvious function is to provide visual interest even when water isn't circulating. 'Very, very popular' "They are a very, very popular item," says Sandy Norvell, training manager for People's Pottery, a chain of 29 stores based in Rochester, N.Y. The stores, including one in Beachwood Place, sell handmade American crafts. Fountains by artists from around the state are on display at A Show of Hands, a store in Great Northern Mall that showcases the work of Ohio artists. They include indoor and outdoor fountains of copper and brass by Vermilion artist Tom Yano and Cleveland ceramist Bette Drake.

"A lot of people just like the sound of it. It's just an interesting thing to have running water in your home in a controlled environment," says David Guthrie, assistant manager at A Show of Hands. Today's design options are vast: from organic forms of stone or metal, to classical pouring urns and spouting fish, to naturalistic howling coyotes and wide-eyed, molded-resin critters. The store, specializing in handmade American arts and crafts, has at least four fountain sources. Another is Torrens, whose sculptural works in copper and recycled materials start at $400 for a counter-top model. The store also carries his steel pillar bases. When choosing a fountain, test the sound, Dye advises. "If you have one bubbler, it's gentle.

Tiers are going to increase your sound." Ideally, the pump's noise level should be adjustable, Dye notes other considerations for prospective fountainheads: Make sure the device has a reservoir large enough to prevent water from completely evaporating. Use distilled water instead of tap or well water, which may have high mineral content, to prolong the pump's life. Choose a model that allows access to the pump, spout and reservoir for occasional cleaning. Sarah Rossbach, author of "Feng Shui Design: From History' and Landscape to Modern Gardens and Interiors" (Viking, 1998, hardcover, sometimes recommends a lobby fountain for commercial design clients as a transition from public to private space. A smaller model can serve the same purpose at home.

"Put it in a place where you want to recirculate energy or to relax," she advises. But don't get too relaxed. The feng shui expert offers the cautionary tale of an interior designer who got a desktop fountain for its calming effect. "But she found she had to go to the bathroom more often," Rossbach says. "I guess there's a downside to it."
