The Canvas Can Do MiraclesYears ago, drenched in Abercrombie Fitch Woods, I was a dock boy, before becoming a DOCKMASTER. I worked at The Ephraim Yacht Harbor, nestled in idyllic Eagle Harbor, a literal port-in-the-storm for those traveling from Lake Michigan or the Upper Peninsula. The five year tenure taught me enumerable lessons that guided me to wherever I now find myself. The job was done mostly shirtless with a high upside for tips, which has always suited me quite well.Client management was critical, as some of the 50 dock slips were occupied by Summer residents living on their boats. But the potential for riches was reserved for the transients and reprobates that came through. The most salient lesson, particularly for those who eat what they kill: Judging a book by it cover generally saves time and heartache. The cigarette boat (usually neon green or yellow sparkled hull) with a barrel-chested, vertically-challenged Cialis-chomping commodore barely would bat an eye at ostentatiously handing you a benjamin for filling his 400 gallon guzzler. But not all that glitters is gold. The 150' yacht owner with F you money delegates all boat maintenance to his crew, and your tip may bite into theirs.Jet skis are of little (to no) value, as you best be well-versed in Kama Sutra to mount the slippery hull, all for the soggy reward of two dollars pulled from an aqua sock. Then there were the sailboats. Spotted from our dilapidated dock house, you would make out a mast, diesel engine puttering slowly toward you on the horizon, hoping against hope they would turn the tiller slightly to steer away from the imminent assault on your integrity and olfactory. And as the crew's forms reveal your worst fears (dorky dad in floppy hat, his beleaguered first mate holding a coozie that says 'Love my Husband but Damn That Boat' and their stir-crazy pre-adolescent regrets) who have traveled two weeks straight throughout the land of fried perch and cheese curds in 90- degree heat to whip up a retched gumbo."We'll take a block of ice and gonna need the head pumped out." With just a dream and the wind to carry me through, the sailors would leave you with a Kennedy half dollar and the reminder. So when I see the mast on the horizon, trust your gut and your nose. Or delegate to your subordinates.Betsy Hoag Margaret (Maggie) Hoag Tad Bungener

So much to say. But first, thanks for grabbing the honey wagon, I’ll get the ice.

MOST SAILING

This week we're on the letter "K" in the #NauticalTerms. Here are a few examples.🟠 #Keel : The central structural beam or fin-like protrusion on the bottom of a sailing yacht's hull, providing stability and preventing lateral movement. Keels come in various shapes and configurations, such as fin keels, wing keels, and bulb keels.🟠 #Knot : A unit of speed equal to one nautical mile per hour, commonly used in nautical navigation and measuring sailing yacht speed. Additionally, a "knot" can refer to a type of loop or fastening made by interweaving or looping rope.🟠 #Kedge : To kedge is to use an anchor to move a sailing yacht by pulling it toward the anchor using a line. This technique is used when a yacht is stuck or needs to be moved in a tight space.🟠 #Knockdown : A sudden and extreme heel or lean of a sailing yacht caused by strong wind or waves, often resulting in the mast touching the water. While knockdowns can be alarming, most modern yachts are designed to recover from them safely.🟠 #Ketch : A type of sailing yacht rig with two masts, typically consisting of a taller main mast and a shorter mizzen mast located forward of the rudder post. Ketch rigs are known for their versatility and balance under sail. These terms are commonly used in the context of sailing yachts and are essential for understanding and operating these vessels effectively.#MostSailing #sailing #sail #sailboat #saillife #sailinglife #sailinglove #travelling #nauticalterms
